We have specialist knowledge of the conservation and repair of historic buildings, and twenty years of experience in conservation projects.
Our projects include small-scale invisible repairs, alterations to Grade 1 listed structures, the design of substantial new-build additions to existing listed buildings, and the assessment and appraisal of large areas of the historic environment.
We focus on projects that reuse, conserve and revitalize historic buildings. We work with the complexities of existing structures, and where appropriate, we create contemporary interventions within carefully and sensitively restored historic fabric.
We are often asked to look at options for the future of much-loved public buildings. We begin our work on these projects by developing an understanding of the people and communities who are around these buildings, to understand local need, and the potential benefits that these buildings could provide.
The idea of “craft” is integral to all aspects of our work. The physical crafts of drawing, making and modelling are valued as a means of communicating and exploring ideas.
Our work is informed by an understanding of the means and processes by which buildings are constructed. We use a palette of materials such as timber, brick, stone, lead, which can be handled and crafted with skill and care.
In the process of working on our award winning Master’s House project, a team from BHA was trained in wattle and daub skills, and carried out wattle and daub repairs on the building.
Existing buildings are a precious resource, and we seek thoughtful ways to adapt and revitalise them for changing uses and clients’ needs. We are interested in vernacular and traditional building techniques, which are inherently sustainable methods of building.
We use industrialised building techniques sparingly, instead using labour intensive methods and localised materials where possible. We are experienced in the PassivHaus approach to reduce energy consumption. Our aim is to create intrinsically sustainable and comfortable environments.
