In this project, the careful repair of the building was interplayed with the insertion of contemporary interventions. This substantial house is a Grade 2 listed, fine example of late Georgian architecture, with an early twentieth century rear extension. The prominent end of terrace location makes a major contribution to the surrounding Conservation Area.
The project included the refurbishment and repair of the external envelope of the building, including roof coverings and sash windows. The dramatic entrance porch was repaired, re-establishing its character as both a significant element of the terrace composition and street scene, and as threshold to the private world within.
The interior of the building was substantially complete, with the plan arrangement intact. Original joinery and fabric, including an elegant staircase, were retained and repaired.
In contrast, the finishes to the basement had been heavily altered, and this presented an opportunity to install a new, crisply detailed kitchen. New bathrooms were installed in the rear extension. To the rear, the relationship between the house and paved garden was recreated through the insertion of a stone, glass and stainless steel staircase and bridge.
